Stop Escaping Reality, and Start Living It

Stop Escaping Reality, and Start Living It

There are times when I watch a movie and something shifts within me. From that point on, I view the world differently. These movies are not award winners, but something in them sings to me.

Moana is one of these movies. I cannot watch it without entering the ugly cry zone. Inside Out is another. As you can tell, I am a mom of small children that love Disney!

Last night, another shift happened. My husband and I watched The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. I’ve seen this movie years ago, and I remembered that I liked it. Yet, I did not anticipate how much it would touch me the second time around.

Walter Mitty has a plain life by most people’s standards, and often finds himself zoning out into his wild imagination. As the story progresses, he stops escaping reality and starts living it.

The turning point comes when his company motto sinks in. The end of the motto states, “…and to feel. That is the purpose of life.” From there, his life takes a seismic shift.

What got to me was that anytime Walter found courage to feel something that he was afraid of, he discovered something deeper within reality. On the flip side, when he held his feelings back, his imaginations once again took over.

Why is this important to you? Because the worst thing that can happen to you is a feeling. Perhaps you fear feeling rejection, failure, humiliation, grief, pain, suffering, or sadness. Our brains are programmed to

But, what is the fear of these feelings costing you? What is it costing your marriage? What is it costing your family? Really take a moment to consider these questions.

Is the fear of failure costing you from taking a job at a start-up company? Is the fear of rejection holding you back from seeking deeper connection with your spouse? Is the fear of grief stopping you from letting your kids spread their wings and try new things?

That’s not to say that everything will magically work out because life is filled with positive and negative emotions regardless of the path you are on.

But…

When you hold yourself back from feeling the emotions that you fear you remain on the sidelines of your life. You take yourself out of the game of Life before it’s even started. Is that where you really want to be??

I don’t want that for me, and I definitely don’t want that for you.
